The ability to find ease when observing the simple things in nature has guided my path; as a garden nursery worker, tree planter and entrepreneur. In 2008, I graduated with a university degree in Plant Biotechnology. I was unsure as to what to do with my degree because I continued to pursue a holistic view and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and corporate ownership of life did not fit into that picture. Attracted to the idea of sustainability, I began to search for an answer for ethical employment as well as a solution to the issues I percieved. My search led me to establish Backyard Groceries, a sustainability minded business that provides chemical free organic produce for individuals, naturally, in their underutilized space. The founding of Backyard Groceries was also in response to the need for a sense of community in the suburbs; Gardens can be the focal point for shared interests in health and prosperity amongst neighbours. Through private and community gardens, presentations, organizations and workshops, Backyard Groceries can help start the dialogue from which many of the answers to the issues we are now facing as a society can come.

One of my most passionate topics to speak about after gardening and permaculture is how we’ve been misled into thinking GMOs are great and are intentioned to feed the world. Although I am vocal about my anti-GMO view, my overriding goal is to get as many people as possible involved in this new emergence of Victory Gardens, helping them improve their health and fostering their sense of connection and self-sufficiency. If asked to present on urban agriculture and you do not wish me to mention GMOs please indicate as such. I am proud to say that Backyard Groceries now offers a range of packages that will meet you where you are and coaching to get you to the next stage.
